Alternative Natural Remedies for ADHD

ADHD is one condition that has been long known as a condition that affects children. However, it is now established that adults are equally inflicted with this condition. The most common ADHD medications, used for managing this condition is the use of pharmaceutical medicines, especially stimulants like Ritalin.

This medicine has been around for more than fifty years now and is very popular with physicians all across the world. However, there are many side effects that have been attributed to pharmaceutical drugs and hence alternative therapies, including natural remedies for ADHD treatment, are becoming popular with all.

Over time, many alternative treatments are available and some of which have been evaluated scientifically. There are a lot of other alternate therapies that have gained attention because people have tried these and have reported positive benefit from them. Some of these alternative therapies that have become popular and have been evaluated scientifically are biofeedback, chelation therapy, auditory stimulation and natural remedies for ADHD like homeopathy.

Chelation therapy is aimed at removing the toxic chemicals from the body, which are one of the causative factors for ADHD. It actually helps in addressing the root cause of the disease rather than managing the symptoms. EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid) is used as a chelating agent that attaches itself to the heavy metals and helps to excrete them from the human body. It can also reduce the production of free radicals in the body.

Biofeedback has been shown to be highly effective in managing ADHD. In a scientific study conducted at the University of California on the application of biofeedback on controlling bedwetting, researchers used this technique and reported a reduction of forty two percent in bedwetting. In this study, the subjects were taught to learn to control the muscles involve in urination by responding to physiological cues.

Homeopathy is a science that is based on balancing the 'life-energies' in a patient to improve his medical condition. Several homeopathic studies have also been conducted on ADHD children and statistically significant improvement has been shown.

Auditory stimulation involves the use of music in improving the emotional and cognitive processes. There is only one scientific study conducted on auditory stimulation as a possible treatment of ADHD. This study concluded that ADHD children improved their ability to solve arithmetic problems when they were made to listen to their favorite music. However, more research needs to be done to establish its efficacy in managing this condition.
