There is an ongoing debate with regards to the treatment and diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). ADD surfaces with symptoms like an inability to focus on daily routine work and hyperactive behavioral symptoms. Sometimes these are transient phases caused by improper environment at home, school or work place. Such temporary phases should not be labeled as ADD unless a thorough diagnosis has taken place.

The controversy that surrounds the use of prescription drugs for treating ADD is targeted around the possible side effects of the drugs administered. The side effects arise due to the fact that most of these drugs are synthetic chemicals that have been produced using chemical processes. The consequences of the side effects are even more pronounced in the case of children since extended periods of treatment with psycho-stimulants and antidepressants are likely to exaggerate the side effects. Over time, these drugs can prove to be disastrous as well as addictive.

Herbal remedies have been in use for centuries and they have been used successfully for the treatment of numerous diseases including brain disorders. Herbal and natural remedies for ADD are founded on the premise that behavioral symptoms are caused by improper diet, intolerance to certain types of foods, low muscle tone, anxiety, depression, poor discipline and other physiological diseases.

These herbs used for treating ADD are mostly derived from a list of remedies listed in the pharmacopoeias of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Naturopathy. Homeopathic remedies too form an integral part of the herbal treatment of ADD since all homeopathic remedies are based on natural substances, totally devoid of any synthetic content.
