All human beings are born with a certain level of psychic abilities. Some are born gifted with intuitive abilities while others have inborn qualities of a painter, singer or a mathematician. Concentration can augment these inherent capabilities and it can be acquired through a focused desire to increase concentration.

Concentration may be defined as complete and constant diligence, attention and mental focus. It is the ability to keep one's mind steadily focused on the job at hand, be it watching a movie, listening to a song, reading a book or writing.

Improving concentration skills is all about mental focus. If you are not distracted, you can concentrate. On the other hand if you are distracted you are unable to do so. Distraction can come from the environment or from within. Even when you are watching a spellbinding scene in a movie that you are totally engrossed in, some movement around you is likely to make you miss it. Noises, extreme temperatures, uncomfortable postures, light and unexpected movements are among the common external factors that hamper concentration and scatter your thoughts. Avoid them to improve concentration.

The turbulence that worries cause may not allow you to do justice to your work. Either attend to your worries before taking up a job or make yourself understand that problems will always exist and they are not the end of the world. They can always be attended to later when you are free. Instead, involve yourself totally in your work. Switching off from worries may not be easy but it can be accomplished by regular practice and will power.

Continuous reading or computer work tires the eyes. Give rest to your eyes by looking away and blinking or lightly massage your eyes with your palms.

Interest and motivation also play an important role in concentration. If the work at hand is not interesting, try to divide the task into smaller tasks and set goals for each. For motivation try asking questions like how, why and what if, regarding the topic. This will develop curiosity and help you to concentrate better.

The Western perception of Yoga does not say it all. Yoga is not only about health benefits and stress reduction. It helps in achieving a fusion of mind, body and soul to achieve unbelievable concentration levels. Yoga and its associated breathing techniques known as pranayama are highly effective in improving physical and brain health.

You can also use natural concentration medication to promote mental focus as supplements to your diet to provide sufficient nutrients like antioxidants to prevent brain damage.

However, a word of caution needs to be added. There are active forms of brainwaves in the brain that are responsible for mental focus and concentration. High states of concentration can also result in anxiety. You should be able to distinguish between concentration and a state of exaggerated concentration. Exaggerated concentration can be compared to the type of concentration that you achieve while driving on a busy road in a snowstorm. Such focus often leads to anxiety. Keeping your calm in the face of difficult situations and adversity always helps in retaining your mental equilibrium and lets you concentrate on whatever you are doing.
